Hi there Mrs M - just a quick note to let you know that things don't have to cost that much here. You can buy good food (and western brand)_ here for much less at other supermarkets. For example, the the Valio milk I buy costs $1.70 approx. My weekly shop at Auchan hypermarket costs bet 5K and 7K roubles. Don't worry - if you move here, I can show you where!

Overall those costs don't look too bad, which I am surprised given the people I've known who lived in Moscow complain about the high costs. I guess the vast majority of that relates to housing costs. Don't complain about a $6 box of cereal as its not uncommon to pay $12-$15 in Jakarta. Oh, and by the way I don't think you have the metric system down or otherwise you miscalculated the costs of bananas. If it truly was $1.50 per gram that would be about $672 per pound ($1.50 x 28 x 16)which I don't think is the case.

Thank you Uncle Bill...I will let the Mr. Know he miscalculated. Housing does appear to be THE most expensive cost of living variable in the mix.

Potty mummy-thank you for your offer to help. I had wondered if I was in the expensive supermarket! It was the 24 hour one near Aliye Parusa.
